User Guide
The purpose of Gmath is to help you learn how to solve problems by yourself so that you will be able to use these skills when taking a math test and will result in improved grades.

The software guides you how to solve problems in stages, a stage after stage, until the problem is solved.

The software does not solve the problems by itself, it only guides. You are actively participating in the solution process and the software helps you when you are stuck and don't know how to continue.

When an problem is solved the software gives you a score.

Practicing problems with the software, especially in your weak areas, will help you understand the principles of solving problems so that you will learn how to solve them by yourself.

How do we start working with the software?

You can enter problems into the software in free form, from homework, worksheets or your own problem, or you can even let the software give you problems.

Use the keyboard or the mouse to enter problems, for example let's enter this problem Example Problem
When we click "Solve" or press "Enter", the solution process starts.

For each stage, an operation is being solved or reformulated. The software opens a dialog that explains what operation should be done now and why

The dialog shows that in order to make the subtraction we first need to bring the fractions to a common denominator, it shows the numbers at the top and a description below.

When we close the dialog, the software will complete the second stage with the reformulated operation. In this process the stages are being displayed one after the other.

You also participate in the solution

The purpose of the software is that you will learn how to solve the problems by yourself, so it does not solve the problem completely for you but have you also participate in the solution process.

Some operations are being reformulated from one stage to the next, like in the example above. Other operations are arithmetic ones (i.e., addition, subtraction, multiplication or division) which need to be solved.

For those operations the software will open a panel at the bottom of the screen for you to solve it.

Don't be afraid, if you get stuck and don't know how to continue, the software will help you.

Here we can see the panel opened for the operation 327x36: You solve the operation a digit by digit, just as in class.

The software marks in red and opens an explanation about the current calculation needed to be made. If you don't know what digit should be entered now, the software can help you, but you have to first try by yourself at least once before you can get help.

Don't worry, go ahead and try your best.

If you were incorrect, a "need help?" bubble will be displayed next to the digit you entered. Clicking the "need help?" bubble will open a window displaying what is the current calculation that needs to be made. The current digit will be marked in yellow. At the end, the solved operation looks like this. If you want to enter the result all at once instead of digit by digit, you can press the "Immediate Result" tab.

The panel display will change to a field where you can enter the result all at once. When the operation is solved you can press "Enter" or click on the panel.

The panel will be closed and the software will show the stages panel and display the next stage with the result.

Get a score

When the problem is completely solved, the software will give you a score and show you the number of correct/incorrect answers you made during the solution. You can use the scroll bar or the up/down arrows to view all the stages.

What problems can you enter into the software?

The software is intended for 4th-6th graders and will guide you on any combination of algebraic expressions and arithmetic operations which includes whole numbers, regular fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, decimal numbers, parenthesis and the four arithmetic operations.

For example:

Improve Your Weak Areas

If you have a weakness in certain areas and you wish to improve them, for example adding fractions with a different denominator or dividing numbers, the software can practice with you and give you problems in those specific areas.

You tell the software what areas you want to practice in by pressing the "Settings" tab right below the "Get a Problem" button. A wizard dialog will be opened and it will lead you through several screens where you can select the particular areas you want to practice with.

The image below shows one of the screens where you select the type of fractions you want to practice with. After you have made your selection, you can click the "Get a problem" button.

For each click, the software will give you a new problem in the areas you have selected.

You can solve it as is or modify it as you wish and then solve it. The more you practice the better you will be.
